DVD-Norman Blake’s Guitar Techniques #2

Description
Norman Blake has long been an icon for lovers of great country-style guitar, a “musician’s musician” whose impeccable taste and sure touch have inspired countless folk, bluegrass and country players. Norman’s music combines a true old-time sound with just enough of a modern touch to make his playing both timeless and contemporary.

On this fascinating DVD, Norman expands the exploration of the guitar style that he so eloquently taught in his previous Homespun DVD, one of our most popular lessons. In an in-depth dialogue with guitarist Happy Traum, Norman demonstrates musical ideas, playing techniques and ten traditional and original songs and instrumentals taken from his vast repertoire.

You’ll see, up close, Norman’s unique rolling pick style, and how he combines flatpicking with fingerpicking to enhance a tune’s harmonic possibilities. His instrumentals and song accompaniments include a variety of important touches: crosspicking, string-hopping, drones, ornaments, bass lines, slides and other means of creating a solid arrangement. He demonstrates powerful back-up techniques, and discusses “how to do the most with the least,” which he masterfully brings to bear on these beautiful arrangements.

You’ll hear about Norman’s preference for 12-fret, short scale guitars (he plays a 1934 Martin 00-40H on this video), and ideas about practicing, adding syncopation to get “those notes in between the notes,” and many other insights into flatpick style.

Instrumentals: “Coming Down From Rising Fawn,” “Caperton Ferry,” “Uncle Joe” (”Miss McLeod’s Reel”), “Old Virginia Reel,” “Coleman’s March,” “New Century Hornpipe” and “Jimmy in the Swamp.” Songs: “Church Street Blues,” “Give Me Back My Fifteen Cents” and “Hobo’s Last Ride.”

Some Techniques to Beginners Guitar

As a new guitar player, do you find yourself eager to learn country guitar? Are you getting nowhere in your practice sessions? I was once a beginner and I know how you may feel.

When I started out, I would learn a few things and practice them for awhile. Inevitably, everything the teacher taught me would be forgotten the very next day. I refused to give up so I had to learn what I was doing wrong.

As a new guitar player, do you find yourself eager to learn country guitar? Have you been trying to play your guitar? This can be a very frustrating feeling. I hope to help you achieve your goals with my country guitar lessons.

Get to know the classic country guitar musicians. You should be taking some time out of your day to listen to the music of the legends. Get to know the music of Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard and others. Do more than just listening. Be sure to check out youtube for videos and tutorials of people playing. It is much easier to learn by videos than by reading a webpage.

Play the songs. I want you to attempt to play the songs even if you need to look up the chords and tabs. I mean the chord structure first, not so much the advanced techniques. Pick a song that sounds relatively easy and learn it. You might also look for an online country guitar lesson that has a backing track you can jam to. After playing through the song completely, this will excite you to continue your guitar learning.

The 3rd tip is the next most important part to playing: Play every day. When you practice, make sure that you continue to develop the muscles in your fingers in order to speed up and play longer. It’s like any other body part. Spend 10 minutes every day doing muscle building exercises. There are plenty of finger building exercises out there that you can do to develop your hands.

Last but not least, grab your guitar and play with some other people. Playing with other musicians is a very important part of improving in country guitar. The only way to do this is well by doing it. Grab a couple of buddies, have them learn the song you learned in step 1 and jam it in your garage or living room. Don’t feel bad if you make a mistake; that’s why musician’s practice.

I hope you enjoyed these 4 tips. Continue to apply what I have taught and you will be better before you know it.

Beginner Guitar Chords for Rock Songs – Chord Techniques for Beginner Guitar Players

All beginner guitarists who want to play rock songs are itching to get started playing chords right away. So let us get some insight into the process of learning beginner guitar chords for rock songs. Naturally you can apply the basic ideas you find in this article to any genre, but the techniques for playing chords are mostly for rock guitarists. The best way to introduce you to guitar chords is to list some easy rock songs and the chords that you need to learn in order to play them. As guitar chords and tabs are easy to find on the internet, I will leave it to you to do a search for the songs you decide to play. Sunshine Of Your Love by Cream – A C G D FBlitzkrieg Bop by The Ramones – A D E BPink Houses by John Cougar – G C F DWild Thing – A D ELa Bamba – C F GAs Tears Go By – G A C DOkay, that should be enough to get any beginner guitar player started. If you do not like the idea of playing the songs that I have listed, then just do a web search for easy rock songs. The songs listed above have these chords in common: C D E F G A B. So you have the seven major chords as your basic chords for rock songs. All of these chords can be played at the first position but in the F chord you have no alternative to playing a bar chord. Or do you? This is the F chord as a bar chord:e–1—————————-B–1—————————-G–2—————————-D–3—————————-A–3—————————-E–1—————————-You can play the F chord without the bar this way:e–X—————————-B–1—————————-G–2—————————-D–3—————————-A–3—————————-E–X—————————-Simply place your left hand fingers to make the bar chord, then lift the first finger and place it at the first fret on the second string. The first and sixth strings are not played. If you move this chord up to the third fret you will have a G chord and at the fifth fret, the A chord. Any barre chord can be fingered this way, and some guitarists use these “internal” chords all the time. You use four fingers to play four string chords. Of course, most guitarists will tell you that you should learn to play the bar chord fingering, and I agree with them. It takes a few weeks to begin to play the bar chords effectively and a few months before you are playing them with no problems, but once that is done, you are set up for a lifetime of guitar playing. The four string chords are just a way of enabling you to play more songs without too much delay. Another way of moving chords up and down the guitar neck is by the use of power chords. Power chord is the name rock guitarists have given to a two note chord containing the root note of the chord and the note a fifth above the root. Common practice has become to play the root note an octave above, for example to play a power chord instead of E major you would play the notes E and B. e–0—————————-B–0—————————-G–x—————————-D–2—————————-A–2—————————-E–0—————————-In the above example if you play with a pick you just damp the G string with a left hand finger and strum all the strings. Or you might prefer the effect when you do not play the top E string so that the E B E B ring out on the lower strings.
