I grew up listening to some amazing guitarists. I do not have enough space to list them all, but some of my favorites were Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, the highly underrated Robby Krieger, and all the blues playing Kings. These guys were phenomenal guitarists and, to me, were nothing less than inspiration. The more we heard, the more I wanted to learn to play guitar like them. I became obsessed with the idea that he could learn to play guitar as well as these guys. However, at the time, resources are limited. I do not know anybody who played the guitar, there was no Internet, no guitar lessons at school, and no money for expensive classes. It's me groping my way toward my goal. I was like a blind man looking for a light switch. I would not know where lighting. When I was about 15 years, I acquired my first acoustic guitar, to name a price without bailing wire strings. Then, in a thrift store, I found a book containing guitar lessons for beginners. From the book, I learned to stringing my guitar with some decent strings and how to tune it. I learned some important basic chords and some old simple classics, like "On Top Of Old Smokey" and "Greensleeves". However, my most useful resource was my collection of rock and roll, vinyl, wax disks, or whatever you want to call the anachronisms of vinyl. Once I realized how to tune my guitar at the same frequency as my plate, I could hear the music and try to reproduce the tones on the guitar. And this is how I acquired the basics of the guitar. By trial and error and determination. I do not think there is a right way or wrong way to learn to play guitar. I believe that with determination and persistence, anyone who is serious can, regardless of what resources are available. The most important piece of advice I can give to aspiring guitarist is to practice, practice, practice. Learning to play can be considered hard work, but for the serious student, not a job at all. It's more like an extraordinary learning experience. Then, to save time, find an instructor or a good book to learn music theory. To be a well rounded musician, it is essential that students learn to read music and tab, and find out how the two are interrelated. The technique comes with practice and, ultimately, the foundation will become second nature and develop a different style you can call your own. From experience, I can tell you that you can learn to play guitar without guitar lessons. However, it behooves you to find a source of instruction. You'll save time and a good instructor will direct you away from the errors of time and bad habits. To learn more, copy this link into your address bar: http://joe-guitar. blogspot. com /

I’m interested in mostly acoustic rhythm (no traditional songs necessarily needed!)
Or if you might recommend just a book etc…

i’m 19 yrs old & im way too good at guitar hero. i think its finally time to invest in learning real guitar rather than playing video games. i never listened to rock or any guitar as a kid b/c of sports & my parents notion that guitar was only for “white hippies”. for the past year ive been listening to nothing but all kinds of rock and guitar (mainly maiden, jimmy page, & metallica). i basically know nothing about real guitar except for what ive picked up on from playing guitar hero and watching musicians play. ive heard that i should learn how to play on acoustic 1st but i’m poor & i’d rather buy an electric to start out on. i have a LOT of time at college to practice & i really want to learn how to play. i want to ask my parents to help me buy 1 (plus an amp & all the BASIC accessories) but i have no idea how much it would cost. does anybody have any advice on the costs of beginning electric guitar?
as for lessons, my roommate is decent at guitar and could probably teach me some basics. but i just want one now to mess around on, before i can afford lessons.
