Some people learn how to play guitar on their own, however the majority of people are not able to learn guitar on their own without any help. At the top of this site I have posted a link that will take you step by step in learning the guitar. I have found many of my students say the guitar lessons really excelled them in their ability to learn guitar.

In the beginning it is good to have patience. Start out learning a few cords and then practice them. Weather you want to play country or rock knowing simple cords is the key to getting started.

Once you have mastered a few cords keep learning more and more. Then you can begin to use variations of these cords to play songs you know or write new ones. This is some of the steps in learning how to play guitar.

I have had my students try different course programs that help them to learn guitar. One good thing about the courses you can take from home is that you decide when you want to take you guitar lessons. You can also decide how many times you want to repeat a guitar lessons.

Billy F. Gibbons is the kind of guy that is irresistible to watch and hypnotic to hear when he’s on stage with his 1959 Gibson Les Paul electric guitar known to the blues and rock world as “Miss Pearly Gates. ” Gibbons, recognized also as “Reverend Willie G. ” is the lead vocalist and guitarist for the band ZZ Top. While he has achieved his infamy through his music, he is also an ordained minister with license to perform weddings in 49 states. Anyone that would like to learn to play guitar like the Reverend ought to know that his distinctive sound is the result of using a quarter or a peso as a guitar pick and his masterful use of harmonics. Gibbons was born and raised in Houston, Texas and is touted to be one of the finest blues-rock guitarists to emerge from the state, alongside the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughan. He had musical influences in his early years; his father, Fred Gibbons played the piano and gave him appreciation for classical and country sounds. The family’s Afro-American housekeeper introduced him to the blues. In 1963 at the age of 13, Gibbons received a Gibson Melody Maker electric guitar with a Fender Champ amp and commenced to emulate the new sounds of rock n’ roll bursting from the TV and radio through Elvis Presley, Little Richard and Jimmy Reid. Gibbons was favoured while in his band, Moving Sidewalks by one of history’s all-time favourite guitarists, Jimi Hendrix. When the band folded in 1969 he pushed his way permanently onto the music scene when he hooked up with fellow Texans, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard of American Blues to form ZZ Top. The band was named after the blues master B. B. King and was initially Z. Z. King. The band members shortly changed it to ZZ Top so it didn’t sound too much like their blues hero. Despite the fact that ZZ Top has sold in the range of 60 million records, one of the most memorable moments Gibbons recalls was an early performance when he was relatively unknown. “Perhaps one of the first performances where the curtain opened and we were greeted by the one paying customer of the evening. We looked at each other, and then launched into the show. Played the first set, took a break, went out and bought the guy a Coke and went back and completed the night. We’re still friends with the guy!” Many aspiring blues guitarists have attempted to mimic Gibbon’s eccentric style over the years but it can be frustrating to make it sound as good as the master. As a beginner guitar player there are a lot of new things coming at you all at once. You’re just getting comfortable holding the guitar and using your left hand to press the strings down on the frets, next thing you know there’s all this memorization, new terminology and your finger tips are swollen and sore. The soreness will go away, I promise that, but starting out with the right foundation as a beginner is key to maximizing what you will learn and how good of a guitar player you will be. This article focuses on three important concepts to follow as a beginner guitar player. There’s a lot more to becoming a great guitar player but these three tips will get you started down the right path. Know Your NotesSome beginner guitar lessons don’t start out teaching you the notes on each string, I believe this is the most important foundational thing you can learn. Chords are made up of notes on each string, scales are made up of notes on each string everything comes back to knowing your way around the neck of the guitar. The first step is knowing the names of the strings but that quickly moves to learning the notes on each string. There’s no way around this it must be memorized but practice makes perfect and you can learn this in a few months. Practice Makes PerfectFilling your head with new theory and techniques is exciting but if you don’t give yourself enough time to master these new skills you’ll quickly get bogged down. Don’t be in a rush to learn everything. Start slow with new techniques and master them. It might seem like you’re taking a long time to learn but you’ll become faster in the long run. Spend 15-20 minutes each day practising rather then two or three massive practice sessions through the week. This will be far more productive then trying to cram everything into a couple of much longer sessions. Expand Your StylesOnce you get the basic down and being to learn some songs you’ll feel a lot more comfortable. Some beginners actually stop learning at this point because they’re so excited they can string chords together to play songs. Don’t stop here. Learning guitar can be a life long journey if you want it to be. I’ve found that the times when become stagnant in my learning I’ve become bored with playing so expand the styles of music you’re learning. Every day people decide to take on new hobbies. One of those hobbies is learning how to play electric guitar. This can be a daunting task and not nearly as easy as people may think. But, all that practice may be in vain if you go about it the wrong way. Too many times, an aspiring young guitarist gives up after just a short time. Either resigning themselves to a level they are never satisfied with or they quit altogether, never to play again. Usually because they become frustrated at their lack of development due to lack of instruction or lack of focus. Endless hours of finger exercises may be part of it, but it won’t get you where you want to be on it’s own. Strumming away aimlessly will definitely not improve your skills. Playing the same three or four songs over and over might impress your friends for a while, but will eventually become boring even to yourself. So, what is the key to this most noble of quests? Any good guitar teacher will tell you there is a sure fire way to keep yourself focused and constantly improving. That elusive secret that all new guitarists are looking for is simply, setting goals. Without goals, you have no idea what you are trying to achieve, much less how to get there. All the instruction in the world is no good without goals. It is like trying to use a map when you don’t actually know what your destination is. The first goal you should set for yourself is a long term goal. Just how good do you want to be? Do you want to be the next Edward Van Halen, Steve Vai or Joe Satriani? Maybe you just want to be good enough to put together a band with your friends and have a good time. You may even just want to be good enough to play around and impress your friends with your new talent. That is ok too. But, it is crucial to set that long term goal for yourself so you can always evaluate where you are as compared to where you want to be. Intermediate goals would of course be next. What will it take to achieve that long term goal? How quickly do you want to achieve it? This will help to determine how often and how long you need to practice. It will also help to determine what type of practice and exercises you need to be focusing on. Last but not least, you should set short term goals for yourself. These can be daily or weekly goals. How long do you need to practice each day and what do you want to accomplish with that practice. These can be determined pretty easily based on the long term and intermediate goals you have set for youself. When most people decide to learn the guitar, they see the only natural option as approaching a professional tutor. Of course, if you are looking to pick up the guitar quickly, one on one lessons with a qualified guitar tutor are probably the fastest way to perfect your skills and to progress with your tuition. It’s also probably one of the most expensive, as compared to the various self-teaching methods available for the determined student. With some determination and drive, teaching yourself in your own time at home can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience, and can save you money in the long run, as well as enable you to spend enough time where you need it most in learning the guitar.

To learn to play guitar at home, you need only a guitar book or a connection to the Internet to pickup guitar online lessons. Other than that, you can begin learning the guitar in a couple of hours a week, or a couple of hours a day depending on your schedule. But in order to succeed at learning guitar, practice is vital, and regular access to a guitar is essential. For this reason, most students borrow a guitar from a friend or family, or purchase one of their own. For less than $100, you can find a great beginners guitar, which will allow you to practice whenever possible for quicker results.

Starting to play the guitar at home firstly requires you to learn how to tune the instrument. Initially, buying an electronic tuner with an LCD display will suffice, although for the longer term it will be desirable to learn open tuning. In most guitar books, you will find a guide to basic tuning, although in summary playing each string in the fifth fret should equate to the sound of the open string directly below. If this is not the case, the string directly below must be adjusted at the machine heads until it sounds ‘in tune’. The exception to this rule is the third string, which must sound similarly to the string below when played in the fourth fret. Again, if there is a discrepancy, it is the second string (i. e. the string directly below) that must get adjusted accordingly to ensure it sounds the same note.

After learning how to tune the guitar, learning at home requires you to grasp the basic chords before you can progress to playing songs, and more complicated chord patterns. Initially, working towards playing a song is the best way to motivate improvement, and to work towards learning to play guitar at home. After learning the basic ‘open’ chords, it is perfectly possible to play most songs, thus learning to play the guitar is not necessarily a terribly complex process. However, it is the ability to play by ear, and to change fluently between complex chords that makes a good guitarist. To increase proficiency, it is essential to practice regularly, and to continue to set targets and to progress.

Many things you learn from playing country guitar licks can be used to spice up solos in other genres. You will now learn to play some useful country licks in the key of A. Some easy, some a little bit awkward but nice!
You can play these licks using a pick or with your right hand fingers. You can also combine the pick with the use of a couple of more fingers like the middle finger and ring finger. This is commonly called hybrid picking. Having a few fingers at your disposal makes it easier to play licks with a lot of jumping between strings.
You will use a form of guitar tablature I have found suitable for articles like this one. The notes you will play are notated with the fret to play before a slash and the string after the slash. An example:

This means: Play the second fret on string four!
You will start with an A-major scale with some ringing open strings.
We will use hammer-ons in this scale. I will notate them with the letter h between the notes:

You will now play this scale descending. This will require you to replace the hammer-ons with pull-offs notated the same way with a p between the notes. It will look like this:

Your first country guitar lick will take you from E7 to A. We will use hammer-ons and pull-offs even in this lick. The suggested chords to play with the lick is in parenthesis:

It is easiest to play in the second position. This means that you play the notes on the second fret with your index, the note on the third with your middle finger and so on.
In your next lick you will also use slides. I will notate this with an – between the notes:

The following country guitar lick uses a bend up a half note. It is notated (1/2b) before the note:

My intention with these licks is that you will learn them by heart as soon as you can. Play a couple of notes or so at a time until you know them by heart and add a couple of more notes. The notation is not important. It’s just a means to convey the lick.
As soon as you know the lick by heart you can experiment with it and change it as you like.
Country guitar licks are often played in a way that creates a rapid succession of notes using a minimum of energy. This is accomplished by the following means:
1. Using a pick and two more fingers or only using the fingers with maybe a thumb pick.
2. Using as much open strings or strings ringing together as possible.
3. Using slides, hammer-ons and pull-offs and of course bends.
There is a risk with this type of licks. The ultimate goal is of course to play them fast and fluid, creating this nice cascades of notes that you can hear from a good country guitarist. To reach this goal you really have to practice these licks slowly using as little tension as possible as you play.
If you are that type of person that wants to learn things fast I guess you have to remind yourself that the fastest way to learn to play fast is to play slowly. It is as easy as that.

The instructional videos are from professional guitarists that show you beginning to end how to play guitar. It’s a great beginner’s course. If you’re looking to learn to play acoustic guitar or are trying to find a good instructional series to get for an aspiring guitarist for Christmas, you should really check out the Guitar Superstars course. It’s a superb starter course for a guitarist to be. The videos are great and so is the guide and exercises that come with the course. You learn quickly and will be able to show off in front of your friends and family in little to no time. It’s a gem of a series.
