Learning to play the guitar has over the years become a much more enjoyable and personal thing to take up considering the amount of resources that have been made available for learners. One of the great things about having the internet at hand is that many people can download guitar video lessons for a small price. The price of downloadable lessons calculates to be cheaper than having one-to-one lessons with a private tutor. Most guitar videos are usually an hour long and come in different parts. As there is much to learn such as the correct way of holding a guitar and fingering techniques, it takes more than one day to pick up all of these skills at any one time. This can be done through short bursts and taking each lesson at one’s own pace. I was given my first acoustic guitar when I was seventeen a few days before my eighteenth birthday, with the intention of one day learning how to play it. This was a short-lived venture as now eight years later it is still living in its grey leather case possibly gathering dust in the back of my room. Guitar experts will be shocked by the notion of any acoustic guitars being treated in this fashion, however, if one is to buy one they need to be prepared to spend lots of time practising and drilling each day to get better at playing it.
The historical value of acoustic guitars is far greater than what is perceived. In fact, this is one of the oldest instruments to have ever been used, much older than the piano or the violin. Guitars available today come in various elaborate styles, functionality and produce interesting sounds. Some synthesized guitars have a certain affect compared to what they did in the past.
History
Before the heavy metal rock stars, before the indie/alternative music scene and before all the folk acoustic guitars that hit the charts, the guitar was a musical instrument appreciated way back as far as 2000BC. The guitar itself derived from the Ancient Indian Sitara, an instrument that is in use even today within the Hindustani culture. Its’ features are similar to that of a guitar, however, very basic in appearance and with a hollowed round gourd.
The term ‘guitar’ was coined by the English from the Spanish word ‘guitarra’, which in turn was derived from the Latin ‘cithara’ and prior to this from the Greek ‘kithara’. Thus coming back to the Persian word of ’sihtar’, which is associated to the word sitar in India. The Romans introduced the modern guitar (known as cithara), as we know it around 40AD to Hispania. This was adapted and followed by the oud, which was a four-string instrument, brought by the Moors, in the 8th century.
The six-string guitar was popularised by the Scandinavians and across through Eastern Europe. This was commonly associated with the Viking excursions across the continent. The Spanish ‘Vihuela’ in the 16th century appeared to depict the modern guitar and a step away from the renaissance instrument. It looked like it had a lute-style tuning with a guitar like body.
It was not until in Italy of the mid 18th century that saw Gaetano Vinaccia produce his guitar label, with the distinct appearance of a mandolin. This had six strings and did not show signs of a modification from a double-course guitar, as it was common for fake guitar labels to be created.
The co-founder of now famous Richenbacher, George Beauchamp, patented the first electric guitar in 1936. This was the turning point of guitar music and the birth of a new innovative sound. It was Danelectro that produced the first electric guitar for the public, giving a chance for new talented musicians to be as creative as possible. Nowadays people are more familiar with both electric and acoustic guitars, with many famous bands (particularly, rock, metal, indie and jazz bands) use this to produce modern music.
This is no longer a privileged instrument used only by jesters and servants, for the rich and wealthy, but is also available for people to use freely from the comfort of their own homes.

I’m sure you have spent many hours or days wishing you could learn guitar and play just like some of your hero’s. I started playing guitar when I was about 12 years old my dad played guitar and I would watch him play and I remember how Iwished I could play like that. I would listen to my records and songs on the radio and be amazed at some of the great guitar players out there like Hendrix or SRV. I thought to myself that this must be impossible, how could Ilearn guitar like these guys. So I asked my dad to get me started with some lessons and I then spent many years teaching myself to play guitar. This is one way to learn to play the guitar, it worked for me as I have been playing in a band for many years and have my own home recording studio and I just released a new CD of our own music,but it took many years to get to this point as I had to teach myself to play. I can remember getting guitar lesson books from the music store and sitting down with them for day’s trying to figure them out but they didn’t teach me much, just a few chords at best. Man I wish the internet was around then so I could see videos and see pro players play their guitars I would have been playing in a band years before I was able to by teaching myself. When we learn guitar solos, we have the choice between learning the music from conventional music notation or from guitar tab. Although tab was used for all music in past ages it has become popular as guitar notation because people who were attracted to playing the guitar were very often not attracted to spending time learning music theory and how to read sheet music. Quite often, a newbie guitarist’s inspiration to learn to play the guitar is the lead guitar player in a famous band. Hearing a great solo guitar player at work raises so many questions about the techniques he uses, the tone and volume settings, and where he gets those great guitar solos from. In this age of instant gratification, you can find the tab for a guitar solo almost as soon as the song is released. To take advantage of the tabs on the internet you need to be aware that the guitar tab can tell you one thing: the notes that the guitarist is playing in the solo. If you play the tab through you may not agree with the notes that are on the tab, so this is the time to make any changes that you feel are necessary. Once you feel that the guitar solo tab corresponds to your hearing of the solo on the CD version of the song, you need to check the fingering that is given. If the guitar tab has been written manually using Notepad or a similar text editor, the fingering given will have been worked out by the guitarist who wrote the tab. If you are using a file from some guitar editing software like Powertab, you need to check the fingering thoroughly to make sure it is easy for you to play. The reason you need to check the fingering is that tab editing programs have no idea what it feels like to have fingers, and if you follow the computer-generated fingering, you might be in for some unnecessary acrobatics. So remember to keep it simple. So, there is no harm in being flexible in interpreting the tab for any guitar solo. If you feel that what’s on the tab does not sound quite right, go with what you have. Once you’re familiar with the music, the correct notes or chord will probably come to you. Also, do not be afraid to take liberties with any guitar solo you are learning. When you are up there playing the music on your guitar, it will be YOUR solo, so you can change it to make it your own if you like.
