I sometimes see that guitar players advise students to learn songs by The Beatles, especially if they are learning fingerstyle acoustic. As searching for tabs that suit your taste and playing ability is sometimes a little bit boring and frustrating, I thought I would tell you about a book that has tabs for thirty songs by The Beatles arranged for solo acoustic guitar. The book is called Fingerpicking Beatles and the tunes are essentially the vocal melody with basic bass lines and some chords. Chords are also featured so you can change the arrangement a little if you feel that it could be improved or it doesn’t suit your taste. The book also has standard music notation, instructions on how to play each song accompanied by photos. If you are not an experienced guitar player, the book also has a basic tutor on fingerstyle guitar. To add to the enjoyment, the book also has the words. The advantage of the classical style of finger picking is the potential to bring out different voices in the piece you are playing by making use of bass lines and accompanying notes. Quite often a guitarist will get some experience and some technique under his belt but feel that he could go just that little bit further. This collection of songs will definitely help if you need to raise the bar on your fingerstyle guitar picking. Here is the complete list of songs: A Day In The LifeAcross The UniverseAll You Need Is LoveAnd I Love HerBlackbirdCan’t Buy Me LoveDear PrudenceEleanor RigbyFree As A BirdHere, There And EverywhereHey JudeIn My LifeLady MadonnaLet It BeLove Me DoMichelleNorwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)Nowhere ManOb-La-Di, Ob-La-DaOctopus’s GardenPenny LanePlease Please MeSomethingThe Long And Winding RoadTicket To RideWe Can Work It OutWhen I’m Sixty-FourYellow SubmarineYesterdayYou’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away The guitar is not a great instrument for sight reading but some of these arrangements are simple enough for a reasonably seasoned guitarist to carry off the first time they see it. Some of the songs did not strike me as being great choices for solo guitar playing, but maybe it’s a matter of taste. The song, Blackbird by The Beatles is a favorite amongst fingerstyle guitar players and all Beatles songs seem to have timeless quality and a melody that lends itself to the needs of a solo guitar picker.

An accomplished fingerstyle guitarist needs to have full control of his or her picking hand along with a complete knowledge of the guitar fingerboard. Peter Huttlinger provides you with the advice, practice routines and exercises that will enable you to play with good tone, strict timing and confidence.
Pete makes this important topic fun for guitarists at all levels. He starts you off with more than a dozen picking patterns, each one using a different combination of thumb and fingers on various strings. These exercises create a solid foundation that will help you with every piece you play, regardless of style.
Moving to the left hand, you’ll learn arpeggios and the “spelling” of chords, as well as Pete’s foolproof method for learning every note on the fingerboard. Chromatic scale exercises up and down the fretboard will work wonders for strength and agility in both your right and left hands.
Finally, Pete puts all these exercises into practice with a bouncy bossa nova chord and rhythm progression and a gorgeous arrangement of a classical piece, “Romanza.” This DVD will give you months of material to work on, and Pete’s regimen will make you a stronger, better player.

TAB, standard notation, performance notes, all licks recorded on CD.
This book is loaded with neat ideas.
Fingerstyle guitar playing is a unique experience that allows the guitarist to explore the full range of the instrument s emotional spectrum. Perhaps that is why this versatile style appeals to all age groups and music tastes.
Here you will learn 101 interesting and varied fingerstyle accompaniment patterns that are suitable for students, teachers, and working musicians. The patterns, which range from very easy to intermediate in difficulty, cover a wide variety of sounds applicable to popular music, folk, blues, country, and gospel guitar.
Because this is a collection not a graded method it is not necessary to work through the examples in chronological order. Simply find a pattern you like on the CD and try playing it on your guitar. If the chosen pattern is too difficult, save it for later and try another one now. You will soon find that this sort of exploration is both fun and instructional.
A lot of fingerpicking accompaniment books make the error of showing all patterns in a fixed chord position, but this is not actually how we fingerpick in real life. Thus, a number of the examples here have moving notes that add interesting motion to the basic harmony.
Each pattern is played four times at a moderate tempo on the companion CD. A drum count-off helps the user begin playing with the recorded pattern on the correct beat.
The patterns would appeal to any guitarist who enjoys listening to artists like James Taylor, John Denver, Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, the Indigo Girls, Mississippi John Hurt (although this is not strictly a blues book; for that, please see my 101 Mississippi Delta Blues Cottonpicking Guitar Licks), Peter, Paul and Mary, roots music, soft-to medium rock. It s a great book for any guitar player who just feels like noodling around with some new ideas.
Finally, the book contains a helpful essay, supplemented with examples, entitled Chord Theory 101. This section of the book will help the beginner with the rudiments of basic chord theory, chord embellishment, and the art of applying fingerstyle guitar accompaniments to real songs.
Overall, an excellent fingerpicking guitar reference book, and an excellent value.
