Firstly, from my own experiences I am convinced that learning solos before experiencing authentic flamenco first-hand in its land of origin is rather like building a house from the roof down. I started with a Mel Bay book and as my fascination grew I bit the bullet and went to Jerez in Spain and studied with David El Poeta, an actual human teacher, and a good one. In a few weeks I learned a whole gamut of essential techniques and nuances without which playing these solos would have been meaningless.
Mr Martin presents some good examples of flamenco playing but they are all based on his deep knowledge of flamenco rhythms and harmonic structures which he acquired by acompanying singers and dancers.
So although it’s all great stuff, a trip to Southern Spain where you can see flamenco guitar played in its natural context would be a sensible step before buying this book and attempting the solos.

I have been playing guitar for over 20 years. I have easily learned rock, blues, jazz and country. I decided to take on flamenco because I wanted to take an acustic guitar to a third world country and play without need of all those electrical toys.

This book and CDs were great! The lessons were placed in order so I could learn basic songs early and then progressively inprove on the style and song, including technical avibity. The CDs were great to view to make sure my technique was being executed properly. And now I am in need of a flamenco dancer!!

    This set was great!!!

It has been a number of years since I tuned my guitar, but it’s a lot like riding a bike once you re-develop the calluses. I was “trained” by a flamenco instructor about 5 years ago in and on classical guitar, always intending to revisit the flamenco form. This book basically picks up where I left off, or a little bit easier than where I left off, and takes off from there. There are a lot of songs yo will recognize and some you won’t, all building on technicality, all with that distinct Spanish flavour. There are 45 pieces (about 90 pages of music) the preface even has some advice on hand and arm position.

The DVD is like a presentation / demo with great explanation on the background and terminology of Flamenco. The tablatures are very accurate. I wish there was more instruction on the proper forms for the left and right hand.
