Guitar Tab: A Language of Its Own

The guitarists have a tendency to be self-taught or, at best, have taken some classes in an informal atmosphere. This is a very different approach from most of the instruments, generally taught formally and with a strong emphasis on music theory and written music. A guitarist, for whatever reason, usually trying to make their way through a new song without the aid of written music. Anyone who has participated in a campfire sing will be familiar with the errors of a performer trying to gain experience through an unknown song. This does not mean, however, that the music written for the guitar, does not exist. It does, and is called guitar tab.
If you search for "guitar tab" in 11 of Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, you will notice immediately, because of the absence of the term of that book, the expression is relatively recent, or the vernacular. Just a little more useful is the fourth entry in Webster's "tab", denoting "[short for tabulator]: a special key on a keyboard to organize data into columns." But for a definition of truth is that address the most popular Internet resource, Wikipedia. The website explains that the guitar tab is simply the term for writing guitar music, or tablature, which is the style of written music generally used for fretted stringed instruments, like guitar.
A guitar tab team consists of six horizontal lines, each of which represents a guitar string. The lower line represents the lowest string, "E", the second line "A", etc. This system, on the lowest string at the bottom and the highest at the top, follows the basic outline of Western Standard Notation. This should not, however, means that the guitar is a standard practice writing sheet music. This is definitely not the case, the result is that the sources of songbooks and other guitar tab usually includes a legend that defines the use of tablature.
Guitar tab is not without flaws. The rhythmic notation, for example, is an important issue in written guitar music, the problem is that normally exist at all. So if the guitarist has never heard a song before he or she has no way of knowing how long a note should be held. Another major problem is that only guitarists can read guitar tab, does not translate to any other instrument, nor is it clear to every other kind of musician. Needless to say, this can make cooperation with other musical instruments difficult.
There is an inexhaustible list of sources of sheet guitar in the world. In addition to more traditional songbooks and guitar magazines, there is a seemingly endless number of websites that offer guitar tab. You can search by genre, by level of competition and type of guitar. . . the list goes on. Some of it is on pay "game", but part of it is free. Of course, one might wonder about the accuracy of some materials, but even a somewhat erroneous written edition of Stairway to Heaven is better than nothing!
