these chord progressions are presented in a very logical manner (from nut to bridge). the progressions get ‘progressively’ more difficult, so the book may be practiced from beginning to end. particularly useful is the section on ‘moveable chords’ where you play a fingering pattern for a certain type of chord (major, minor, etc.) and move it up or down for the pitch you want (g, d, e, whatever). the fact that it covers all 12 keys is important, because so many guitar songs are written in just a few easy keys. be aware that there are typos in the book. there are mistakes in the fingerings (they will be pretty obvious, since your hand just doesn’t go that way) and also in the roman numerals of the progressions. that is the main reason why i gave it a 4 star rating and not 5. i already know theory, but i imagine the errors could be very confusing for a total beginner. while i feel like this is a useful reference, it does not stand alone as a method, and it is a little light on theory, but once you get started any music teacher can fill in the gaps. the only thing i felt was really missing is that they could have added some sort of a lead sheet page at the end so that you could review all the different chords/progressions without flipping through the book, but this is something you can type up yourself. song examples (or at least song titles) would have been nice too, but that may be outside the scope of what the author intended. bottom line – buy it and expand your vocabulary as a rhythm guitarist. if you really learn the progressions in this book you will have a voicing for each type of chord in each key – meaning it may not be ‘pretty’, but you can hack your way through just about any song out there.

I’ve been playing guitar for 25 years and I’ve had to learn a lot on my own. When I get students, I try to customize a program for them that will engage them in chord changes that are fun yet challenging. For a long time, I’ve tried to find a book that would provide the fun/challenging factor. Lo and behold, THIS IS IT! I will use this book to teach all my beginner students. It progresses from the first chords, first chord progressions, then onto some more challenging chords. After learning this book from beginning to end, a beginner could reach a decent intermediate level knowledge of chord progressions and how to implement them in their playing. No, this is not an “advanced jazz progressions” book but I would recommend this book FIRST. A student that exhausts the exercises in this book would then be ready to tackle more complex chord changes. Definitely a MUST for any beginner. This book does have a ton of chord progressions….but all of the same sequence! 95% of the book is the same patterns, i.e. I-IV-V Blues, I-vi-ii-V (the 50’s) twice, and the Blues again in the 7th chords.

Some of the Jazz Swing stuff was cool, but overall if you know how to read a Circle of 5th’s wheel you can do a lot better than this book. Unless you are a total beginner, I can not recommend this book, it is too simple.
