Learn tons of chords. Work on rhythm and timing. Get a metronome and play with some drummers and bassists. Listen to some of your favorite songs and try to play along with them. Try listening to Malcolm Young’s rhythm playing in AC/DC. Also give the Ramones a listen. Johnny Ramone is a great guitar play and he rarely ever played a guitar solo.

If you have a friend that plays bass it will be easier. Bass and rhythm guitarists play off of one another harmonically and have to work close with percussion to enhance the groove.
Listen to some Chic. They had great rhythm guitar work because of Nile Rodgers.
