This could have beeen a good DVD, but isn't. The insturctor doesn't take the time to tell you the string and fret he starts on. It was hard to find the notes. On "And I Love Her" I had to buy a tab book to find the lead. The spanish guitar has no fret markings and the teacher didn't tell you where he was playing. I've played for years and found this DVD to be too vague to be of much use. Buy a good tab book instead if you want to learn the songs.

I have this one on VHS. I agree with other comments that tab or at least chord diagrams would have been helpful, especially for beginners. For intermediate players it should be OK. I think Hal Leonard wants you to buy their books too.

The best "start" for beginners, if you are a fan of the fab four and you enjoy playing the guitar, this is a must. The video is pretty good and the most important is that every single step is very good explained.
Regards

OK - lots of people have been trashing this DVD, but it's a bit unfair to do so because it doesn't have tab to go with the DVD. Here's the deal: it didn't promise tablature (which is READILY available all over the place for Beatles tunes). If you do your homework you'll know before you buy this that it doesn't include tab. So crying about it is a bit pointless.

Expect to be using that funny little button your DVD player with the two vertical lines (||), called "pause", and maybe get really technical and learn how to set an A-B loop so you can watch a specific selection over and over if need be. Amazingly, you'll find it helpful later because most DVD players will also play audio CDs and some even do (Gasp!) MP3s, and this wonderful skill will let you rehearse to your favorite songs (and portions thereof) with relative ease...

The instructor looks and sounds a bit uptight and nervous, but his presentation of the music is dead on and easy to follow, and I did not find it difficult to tell what his hand/finger placement was. So the chords were easy to identify. I've been playing guitar part-time and recreationally, w/o enough practice time frankly, for about 18 months, and I found this an easy set of lessons to work with. After a couple of sessions I had the basics of "Dear Prudence" and in a few weeks of spare time I had it pretty much down. I walked in and played it for my instructor and his jaw dropped.

Really the only thing I would fault this DVD for is the selection of songs. Rocky Racoon? Maybe the folks who were complaining should have started with that song, if only for simplicity's sake. But, the other songs are fine. If you are not a rank beginner, you will probably find this to be a good DVD for learning the songs. Just don't expect tab - plan on treating it like a tab-free lesson w/an instructor....one you can pause.

Not so good if you're a beginner..

To begin with, he plays the songs fine

But if you don't know the chords for each song, its gonna be rough. Okay, its gonna be impossible..

Its all very well to MENTION Travis picking, but if you're not SHOWING how to alternate the bass when playing that..

I picked up Travis picking by playing it OVER and OVER again, starting slow, then picking up the speed

You're not gonna learn the songs Dear Prudence & Julia here though - you might be able to pick up some of the chords, but if you don't have the tabs or chords for most of these songs, you're gonna be really lost

I think "Rocky Raccoon" is the only song that a novice watching this is going to be able to pick up by watching, and thats only cos there are so few chords

Do me a favor - if you're trying to learn the White Album tracks, or the early songs, pick up an old issue of Total Guitar or Guitarist where you can listen to the song played SLOW on the accompanying cd

Or maybe Guitar World Acoustic magazine might help when trying to start to learn Travis picking

You're not gonna learn the songs from this dvd. Sorry, but there it is. Unless you know the songs already, this dvd is pretty useless. Sorry
